Move Past the Lag: 6 Ways to Boost Your Internet Speed

There’s probably nothing more frustrating than waiting for something to download online, especially when you pay good money for faster internet speeds. Unfortunately, it happens to the best of us and if not corrected, it can make even the most mild-mannered person feel like a madman.

If your internet moves slower than a turtle, here are six ways to help pick up the pace.

Change Providers

Probably the easiest way to correct slow internet speeds is to find a different provider. Sometimes, even when it seems like everyone else is zipping around online, the provider you have just can’t perform in your area. This can happen for a variety of reasons including living in a remote location. If the internet you’re paying for just can’t keep up with your internet needs, you’re better off switching internet providers.

Move the Router

Sometimes the issue isn’t with the provider but the router itself. If the router is in good working condition, try moving it to another location in your home. Many times, this resolves slow download speeds. If not, you may want to reach out to your provider and ask for assistance.

Block Ads

Ask anyone you know and they’ll agree that online ads are beyond intrusive. They can also slow down your internet speed as well. If you don’t already have one installed, download an ad blocker to help filter out any ads that may be causing a lag. You’d be surprised how many ads run in the background of webpages and you don’t even know.

Use an Ethernet Cable

The days when Ethernet cables were required may be long gone but that doesn’t mean you should have one handy. In cases where moving the router or even changing providers just won’t work, being hard wired to the router often does the trick.

Clear the Cache

The cache in your computer stores a lot of information, including all of the cookies from the web. When it’s too full, it can significantly reduce download speeds. Periodically clearing the cache may speed up your internet connection.

Invest Malware Protection

Malware, like Trojans or viruses, can infect your computer without you ever realizing it happened. When it does, it can slow your computer speed to the point where it’s unusable. Play it safe and invest in high-quality malware protection. Not only will it keep your internet running at top speed, but it will protect your computer from the dreaded blue screen of death.

The internet is no longer somewhere we go to pass the time. It’s now an integral part of daily life, which means it has to work quickly and efficiently. If your internet speed suddenly takes a nose dive, there’s probably a good reason for it.
